Looking around the other tables, the average age looked to be 80 and I worried our waitress could keel over any minute from a heart attack. The spätzle was fair, kind of dry and tasteless. For main entrees we had schnitzel, sauerbraten typical German fare. The taste was excellent just lacking the lobster. Would have expected a few morsels given the price. Starters was lobster bisque, very good but no pieces of lobster in the soup. I always remember a German band playing but this Saturday evening we must have been early, so was disappointed some of the German charm was lost. We dined here as a family event looking to enjoy the authentic German atmosphere and food. The Black Forest is a staple German Restaurant in northern NJ for as long as I can remember. I was thinking we should try it one more time and stick to schnitzels, but I don't think it is worth the 45 min drive for us. Service was sparse - was not asked if we wanted another drink (we only had 1 each). His red cabbage was decent, the potato dumpling was decent. My husband had the crispy pork shank which needed to be cooked a little bit longer to be perfectly tender. My sides were the vegetable of the day (covered in something like tomato based sauce) and the spaetzle, which did not resemble anything like homemade (we have a spaetzle maker, we know) and looked more like the noodles that come in lo mein dishes. I have never had "traditional" stroganoff that doesn't come with egg noodles! Instead of that starch, I had a small side of mashed potatoes. The beef stroganoff filled up only half a plate (with each steak piece resting on its own), was overcooked, and did not come with any egg noodles. I started with an octopus salad special, which was a small portion but delicate and flavorful. It started off ok - husband had the herring which he said was a little over marinated but otherwise traditional and nice. However, for the prices, I definitely expected something better. This place somewhat "stuck in time", which we wouldn't have minded if the food was good. We've been to Strasbourg and have had wonderful German and Alsatian dishes, so we were looking to repeat the experience, or get a little closer at least. It is a very relaxing and charming place to eat and I can’t recommend it enough. We had high hopes after reading reviews. The red cabbage and spaetzle were very good. It’s one of those dishes everyone loves when they eat it but no one wants to take time to make it. My great grandmother who was born and raised in Hamburg Germany made sauerbraten for us when I was a child and eating it at the Black Forest inn brought back very good memories. They all ordered jagerschnitzel and I had sauerbraten and it was all amazing. Our server was very charming and friendly and he was patient with us as we explored the amazing German menu. First I want to thank the employees for being gracious considering the young men I was with were all wearing very casual clothes and they were treated like any other customer so thank you for that. I was also taking two of his friends as well. Forest inn doing a search of interesting places to eat in the area. He turned 21 and I wanted it to be a nice dinner. I wanted to take my son who is in college out to a nice dinner that was different than the places around his university which is in south orange. There are so many other places to dine at before you ruin your evening, here. We asked a waiter and two waitresses if they could turn the air on. Whatwasn't entertaining was sitting, eating dinner, and sweating your butt off. The waitress was wonderful and entertaining. $2.75 for what appeared to be a thin 6 ounce glass. refills of that crappy RC cola means you get charged twice. Not to mention $11 dollar cake that was stale, and coffee at $4.00 per cup (served in a cup that would be in a child's tea set). My first impression was that a restaurant that can't sell Coca Cola, or Pepsi, but resorts to RC cola it is in sad shape. Food is still good, BUT outrageously priced for the portions. one can tell that COVID got the best of this restaurant. My previous review was a 4 star rating, food excellent, atmosphere excellent, waitress excellent, only thing wa that the trip was a little pricey. We waited through Covid and it has been three years since we were last here.
